Originally intended as shelters for large numbers of troops, these tunnels are virtually complete, the complex covers an area of 75,000 square feet and the galleries lined with 15,000 tons of concrete. The hospital was equipped with an operating theatre, kitchen, cinema, staff quarters and wards for 500 patients, these numbers could be doubled in an emergency. The entire complex is privately owned and no attempt has been made to commercialise the tunnels as in Jersey. It is somewhat neglected and very damp but the sheer scale of the tunnels makes a visit well worthwhile. |
